The Innovation, Creativity, and Design Practice is at the core of Berkeley’s leadership in human-centered and design-thinking based approaches to innovation.


We believe that innovation is the centerpiece of corporate strategy, and that the proper tools, processes and organizational design can make innovation a repeatable process and source of competitive advantage.

By fostering connections between Haas and industry, we give students an inside ‘hands-on’ look at both the innovation process and human-centered design, and help them develop the skills, tools, and strategic framework for path-bending leadership.

Meet the Team

Dave Rochlin

Executive Director

Dave is both a professional faculty member at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and executive director of the Innovation Creativity and Design Practice. As executive director, Dave leads the overall practice, all programs and courses, and relationships with external practice partners.

As a lecturer, he co-developed and teaches the MBA-level applied innovation project course (Haas@Work), the core Fundamentals of Design Thinking Course, and a cohort-wide foresight and exponential change design sprint (We|Innovate). He is also the Faculty Director for the UC Berkeley summer abroad program in Geneva, Switzerland – focused on business innovation for sustainability, social responsibility and positive impact – and teaches a related undergraduate course in Berkeley. Outside of Haas, he is a consultant social entrepreneur, focused on market-based approaches to social/environmental issues including deforestation, climate change, corporate social responsibility, sustainability business, and ethical globalization. Prior to coming to Berkeley in 2010, he founded a hybrid social venture called ClimatePath, and was COO of the NGO TransFairUSA (now FairTrade USA), a 4 time winner of Fast Company/Monitor’s social capital award. He was also professional faculty member in the Executive MBA program at St Mary’s, where he developed and taught the technology and ebusiness strategy course, and has taught advanced marketing and strategy courses in Europe and the Middle-East. He is a frequent writer and speaker, and author of the textbook “Hunter or Hunted: Technology, Innovation, and Competitive Strategy” (Thomson/Cengage 2006). Dave has held key executive VP and C-level positions with several fast-growing internet pioneers, including helping to build, grow, and eventually sell businesses to Hollywood Video and Earthlink, and placing companies on both the Deloitte 50 and INC 500 lists. He also has turned around smaller software and e-commerce firms where profitability took precedence over growth. He started his career in brand management and consulting. Dave earned his MBA (with distinction) at the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern, and his B.S. from the Haas School at U.C. Berkeley, where he played football and rugby, and also met his future wife.

Susan Mendel

Associate Director

In her role as Associate Director of ICDP, Susan oversees the administration of and manages the logistics for all our course offerings. She works closely with Dave Rochlin and Clark Kellogg to constantly improve the curriculum of the courses and on hiring faculty and GSI’s. In addition, Susan is a resource for the students in the course for any of the technology-related tools, and enjoys seeing design-thinking transform a student’s perspective on approaching challenging business innovation issues.

Since coming to Haas in 2011, Susan has been a part of over 50 projects with over 500 students in the Applied Innovation/ MBA Innovation Agency course, and loves seeing students put design thinking theory into action.

Previously, Susan served as an Executive Marketing Assistant for the Stanford Photonics Research Center at Stanford University. She has also worked at the Microelectronics Reseach Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Susan holds a MBA from Mills College Lorry I. Lokey School of Business with a focus in non-profit management, and a BA in Anthropology, with a minor in History, from Emory University.

Clark Kellogg

Faculty Lead

Clark Kellogg is a curious soul who brings an unending passion for creativity to his Design Thinking practice. Trained as an architect at UC Berkeley, Clark has over thirty years of experience spread among architecture, product design, and strategy creation.

His academic background covers 15 years at UC Berkeley, currently teaching Creativity, Design Thinking, and Applied Innovations at Haas. Privately and as a co-founder of The Berkeley Innovation Group, he has led consulting engagements with corporations, non-profits, governments, and universities in North America, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
